Safety Precautions When Being Around Dogs

Sometimes we see people walking their dogs and we want to pet them, or we visit friends who have dogs and attempt to play with them. Pets are generally known to be friendly, loyal, and playful companions. But sometimes that’s not always the case with everyone. According to the CDC, more than 4.7 million dog-bite incidents occur in the United States every year. How can you make sure you don’t become a victim of a dog-bite? We’ve given you these safety precautions for being safe around unfamiliar dogs.

Lets first discuss why dogs bite in the first place. Dogs may bite because they are in a stressed situation or feel scared or threatened. They also may bite to protect their owners or their puppies. They may get startled by something and react. When being around a dog, you should be aware of their body language and mental state to be able to detect a bite situation more quickly.

Preventing Dog Bites

Don’t approach unfamiliar dogs. If you do approach an owner with their dog, always ask the owner first if it’s ok to pet them.

If an unfamiliar dog approaches you, do not run or scream. Remain calm and motionless. Dogs can sense when you are scared, which can make them feel uneasy.

Don’t disturb a dog when it is eating, sleeping, or taking care of its puppies.

Don’t pet a dog without letting it see and sniff you first.

Pay attention to its body language. If its body is tense, its ears are pulled back, or its got furrowed brows, this indicates that the dog is not in a comfortable and relaxed state.

Following these tips may help prevent you from getting bitten in a potential situation. Respect the dog and be mindful of its environment and mental state.
