Record Low Temperatures Affecting Fruit Trees in Michigan

Record Low Temperatures Affecting Fruit Trees in Michigan

This year’s winter has been one full of record lows all over the United States. Michigan is no exception to the harsh weather that the winter has swept the country with and now, the Michigan Farm Bureau is reporting that fruit farmers have noticed damage from the cold and heavy snow. Michigan is the “national center for tart cherry production” which worries many farmers. Heavy snowfall can be good because it protects the ground but its weight can also damage lower branches, causing a halt in the state’s overall cherry production.

The harsh temperatures have also affected wine grape vines and other fruit plants but the full extent of the damage won’t be clear until after the spring frost rolls through. This situation also happened in 2012 but then, most of the cherry and apple crops were destroyed. Farmers have hope that the sun and wind will help the crops get back to normal.
