Construction on the M-1 Rail Begins This Month

In 2007, the M-1 Rail project was started in an effort to help fuel economic development and urban renewal in Detroit, Michigan. The M-1 Rail circulates along Woodward Avenue between Larned Street and West Grand Blvd for a total of 3.3 miles. The project also helps modernize Detroit, provide an alternate form of transportation and become a foundation for growth throughout the city.

After years of planning, construction for the M-1 Rail Streetcar is set to start in August and is projected to take about 27 months to complete. This will cause the southbound side of Woodward Ave. to be closed from August 2014 until April 2015 for the first phase of the reconstruction of the bridge. Other areas of the cities lanes are set to partially close during the construction process as well. Many locals in Detroit are excited about this M-1 Rail construction, but there are some who believe the 3.3 mile route is not long enough. Either way, the M-1 Rail will be serving 12 stops at 20 different stations, making it easy and safe for locals and visitors alike to travel around the city with ease.
