Winter Skin Care Tips

Winter Skin Care Tips

It’s wintertime, which for a lot of us means cold weather and snowfall. This year has been one full of record lows in temperatures, causing an increase in dry skin. It’s important to take proper care of your skin especially in the wintertime. Cold weather can lead to an increase in dryness to the skin and can result in flaking, cracking and even eczema (inflammation of the skin). Cold weather outside as well as heat from staying indoors with a heater on can make your skin dryer than normal.

If you suffer from extra dry skin during the winter, there are a few tips you can follow to remedy it and avoid unwanted damage. It’s always a good idea to meet with a specialist. A dermatologist, for example, can examine your skin and give you specific advice on treatments, according to your particular skin type. Next, the most important thing is to moisturize. It’s important to use an “ointment” moisturizer that isn’t water based, but oil based. Oil creates a layer in the skin that retains more moisture than regular creams and lotions. Those labeled “humectant” also help attract moisture, as well as avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil and almond oil.

Many of us don’t realize that winter sun can cause as much damage as summer sun. It’s important to wear sunscreen if you’re outside, even if it’s the wintertime! This can help prevent dry skin issues. Since skin on your hands is thinner than the rest of your body, wearing gloves can help keep your hands moist as well. More tips like avoiding wet gloves and socks, avoiding hot baths, and using a humidifier are good for protecting the skin. It’s best to use several small humidifiers around the house, that way the moisture is spread evenly throughout the home.

What’s Your Favorite Soup?!

What’s Your Favorite Soup?!

January marks a very special commemorative month. A month to celebrate the warmth and tastiness of…you guessed it…soup! When it’s cold outside as it commonly is in Michigan, it’s easy to want to cozy up inside with a nice cup of soup in hand to keep you warm.

Soups come in all forms. From thick and creamy to water based to the ever popular chili, there’s no shortage of soup choices. In fact, you could enjoy a different soup every day this month! Soup is a form of liquid food that combines a wide variety of ingredients like meats, vegetables and beans in water or stock until favor is extracted, forms a broth and is boiled to serve hot, although plenty of folks around the world enjoy it cold. January is the perfect month to celebrate the greatness of soup. Soup is easily digested and usually healthy due to how light it is, depending on the soup.

Food historians believe that soup has been around since humans started cooking and now, it’s evolved into a worldwide phenomenon. Japanese miso soup, Spanish gazpacho, Russian borscht, Italian minestrone, French onion, and Chinese won ton are just a few examples of soups from all over the world. Soup is versatile and can be served along with other foods like breads. For example, many soup-goers like to pair the ever popular tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich. Making soups are easy, healthy and can even help relieve a cold or flu! No wonder there’s an entire month dedicated to it!

Polar Vortex of 2014

Polar Vortex of 2014

It seems like this year the entire world is talking about how cold it is outside. The polar vortex is basically an arctic cold front resulting in heavier than normal snowfall. Record low temperatures have been reported across North America. According to the United States Weather Bureau, more than 200 million people have been affected by this drastic weather so far. Every year the temperatures drop lower and lower resulting in new record lows. This polar vortex has led to a large amount of flight cancellations and school, business and road closures.

On January 6th, 2014 it was reported that Babbitt, Minnesota was the coldest place in the country with temperatures dropping all the way down to -37 °F. By January 7th, about 49 record lows were reported across the United States. The impact of this polar vortex affected pretty much everyone, leading to flight cancellations and about a dozen deaths. On January 6th, around 3,600 flights were cancelled due to heavy snowfall. Niagara Falls even froze! Many studies are being done to determine whether or not the polar vortex is occurring as a result of climate change or if it’s normal and nothing to worry about long-term. We are no strangers to extreme weather and some have even stated that this year’s polar vortex is the worst weather event since Superstorm Sandy. The impact of this polar vortex, so far, has cost an estimated $5 billion. Losses from the transportation sector, schools and businesses have been highly affected, leaving people stranded or forced to stay indoors for a long period of time.

The best way to stay safe during this extreme weather is to realize there’s not much you can do to change the situation. Whatever happens, whether you have to stay home all day or your flight is delayed, make sure you stay calm and relax. Dealing With Psoriasis In The Winter

Dealing With Psoriasis In The Winter

Psoriasis is a common skin disease that affects about 7.5 million Americans. It’s the most common autoimmune disease in the United States and can also lead to joint issues. Psoriasis affects the skin, causing scaly, often red patches that are usually itchy. There are five main kinds of psoriasis: there’s plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular, and erythrodermic, the most common being plaque psoriasis. Many believe it’s a genetic disease triggered by the environment like stress and cold weather because it makes the skin dry, leading to an outbreak. Unfortunately, there is no cure for psoriasis, but there are ways to prevent a breakout and treat the symptoms. Applying epsom salt, moisturizers, and petroleum jelly are just a ways to reduce dryness and help treat discomfort of the affected skin.

When living with psoriasis in a cold environment, it’s important to keep your skin moist in order to control itching and redness. Thicker creams are better because they allow your skin to absorb water, adding the most moisture. Taking long showers and using hot water removes moisture, so it’s important to use warm water and apply moisturizing creams right after to ensure the water absorbs into your skin optimally. Drinking water is another good way to keep your skin hydrated and help avoid dryness. Stress is also a factor that affects the frequency and severity of psoriasis, so focusing on being relaxed can also help.

Driving in Ice and Snow

Driving in Ice and Snow

While much of the United States is experiencing below freezing temperatures and large amounts of snowfall, it is a good time to remember driving safety in these situations. The best way to stay safe is to wait until the roads have been plowed. However, sometimes you just can’t wait. If you find yourself having to drive in these extreme weather conditions, here are some tips on how to prepare your car:

1. Replace your windshield wipers and fluid before the season.
2. Check your defrosting and heating units.
3. Check your antifreeze levels.
4. Check your oil and oil viscosity.
5. Check your battery.
6. Replace your regular tires with snow tires.
7. Always have a full tank of fuel.
8. Have an emergency kit handy in your car.

Unfortunately, even if all these tips are followed and you feel your car is safe, Mother Nature can be too much to handle and you can still get in an accident. After all, each year 116,800 people suffer personal injury in motor vehicle accidents while driving on roads that are snowy, slushy, or icy. If this happens to you, we have a great solution. Call 1-800-411-PAIN to talk to the people at Motor City Accident Attorneys. Motor City Accident can help you if you get in a snow-related car accident. Staying Safe During a Blizzard

Staying Safe During a Blizzard - Motor City Accident Attorneys

It’s winter which means lots of heavy snowfall. Many people think of snowstorms as fun and a good way to stay home from work or school, but blizzards can also be dangerous. It’s important to be prepared and know what to anticipate before the storm starts. Blizzards can be dangerous whether you’re driving or you stay inside. During a blizzard snow comes down at rapid speed and with strong winds, making snow piles deep enough to bury cars and other objects. For cars, this means poor visibility which could lead to a car accident if you decide to drive in that condition.

Before enduring a storm it’s important to know what to look out for and how to prepare for every situation. There are objects that you should keep easily accessible. Oftentimes during a blizzard there are power outages, so it’s essential to keep things placed in particular areas in case you’re left with no light or way to look for them. Make a “blizzard kit” with the following items in it: blankets, batteries, flash lights, battery operated radio/TV, bottled water, toilet paper, nonperishable foods, canned goods, non-electric can opener, a small cooler and candles. Designate a few spots in the house where you can leave blizzard kits, warm clothes and any other emergency items and let everyone else in the house know where they can find them if the power goes out. Stock up on shovels and other snow maintenance items, keep your cell phone charged, get an emergency generator and most important: STAY INSIDE!

Be aware of what’s going on in your community. It’s better to be over prepared than under-prepared especially when it involves natural disasters.
