New Detroit- Canada Bridge Plans Underway

New Detroit- Canada Bridge Plans Underway

The city of Detroit has declared bankruptcy and since have been looking for ways to raise money and become a profitable, growing city again. The newest development is a new project that could boost the economy by providing jobs and helping with exports: a Detroit-Canada bridge. The privately owned Ambassador Bridge has existed for 84 years, but a new bridge would go a long way in helping trade and traffic grow while creating jobs and opportunities on both sides.

Supporters of the new bridge believe that an alternative for crossing borders is necessary for growth on both sides. This project, dubbed the New International Trade Crossing project, calls for Canada to contribute 2.3 billion of the total 3.5 billion needed to complete the project. Plans for the border to border bridge indicate that purchasing land would start in the summer, but construction wouldn’t start until 2016 and have an end date of 2020.

Indianapolis Colts Owner Jims Irsay Charged with DUI

Indianapolis Colts Owner Jims Irsay Charged with DUI

Jim Irsay has been the owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts since 1997 after he inherited ownership after his father died. Irsay, now 54 years old, is facing four felony charges after being arrested in Indiana for driving under the influence as well as possession of a controlled substance.

While driving suspiciously slower than the speed limit, Jim Irsay stopped in the middle of the road and failed to use his turn signal before a cop pulled him over in Carmel, Indiana. Irsay failed the field sobriety tests that were given and several prescription pill bottles were found in his car. Unfortunately, the pills inside the bottles didn’t match the actual prescription on the bottle. Investigators have made a possible connection and assume Irsay is still struggling with an addiction to pain killers that he admitted to having back in 2002.

Cold Weather Affecting Car Sales

Cold Weather Affecting Car Sales

Record low temperatures mean people would rather stay indoors, enjoying the luxury of their heater. For car companies, this means trouble. Many companies have seen a heavy decrease in their sales during this winter season –a bigger decrease than this time last year.

The winter chill has been a huge factor in the decrease of automobile sales this year. Compared to last year, GM sales fell 1%, Ford sales fell 6%, Toyota fell 4%, and Volkswagen fell 13.8%. It’s clear that the reasons are weather-related as Ford has stated their sales have not been affected in areas that aren’t slowed down by the weather.

On the other side of the spectrum, certain companies have seen a sizable increase in sales this winter season. Chrysler did the best and saw an 11% increase which is their highest sales increase since 2007. This increase is due to the fact that they offer the highest amount of SUV’s and trucks –something drivers who deal with icy and snowy roads are more prone to buy. Nissan is another company that did well this year, seeing a 16% increase in sales. This feat, however, was not achieved without effort. In order to incentivize sales, Nissan offered discounts and dropped their sale price by 2% since January.

Although the automobile industry saw a decrease in sales, the inevitable increase in temperature brings high hopes for a rise in March. Wintertime Slip and Falls

Wintertime Slip and Falls

With winter comes inevitable snowfall and freezing temperatures. According to the National Safety Council's study of injury facts, it was found that 1 in 163 people died from falls. Freezing temperatures also mean layers of ice develop on the roads and can be hard to avoid when traveling from place to place which could lead to a slip and fall accident.

There are several measures one can take to prevent slip and falls. Wearing appropriate shoes is very critical. Look for anti-slip/slip resistant shoes that can help control traction while walking. After walking through a snowy or icy/wet area, make sure you remove as much snow and water from your shoes as you can. Carry a small towel or anything else you can use to dry the bottoms of your shoes before entering a building. Wear bulkier clothing that way if you do slip and fall you have a layer that can break your fall. Take advantage of handrails as they will also help support you while walking on slippery floors. Speaking of support, it’s also best to keep your hands out of your pockets because your arms help with balance and if you do fall, you’ll be more prepared.

When walking outdoors, it’s important to stay alert and examine areas you’re planning to walk on. Before standing or walking, check the area out with your toe to make sure it’s sturdy and not too slippery and if it is, prepare accordingly. Take smaller, more deliberate steps and although it sounds odd, walking like a penguin can also help! Pointing your feet out slightly increases your center of gravity and helps keep you in control. Before crossing the road, make sure cars are at a complete stop and take extra care when entering and exiting vehicles.
