Detroit’s “Grand Bargain” Debt Cutting Plan

The city of Detroit is working hard to adjust its debts and now, there is a new plan that could help them overcome bankruptcy. The “grand bargain” plan has been approved by 82% of police and fire retirees and would go a long way in helping the city get back on its feet. The plan would make most retirees face a 4.5% pension cut –but it would help Detroit fix their debt problems and invest in services that would help secure the city’s financial footing.

Issues like the city’s water shutoff are serious and residents of Detroit are determined to find a solution as soon as possible. The plan will be presented to the bankruptcy judge (Steven Rhodes) at a hearing on Monday, July 28th. Kevyn Orr, Detroit’s emergency manager and planner of the “grand bargain” is confident that the plan will lead the city in a positive direction.
